Guest Post: The Disability Flag Precious: A Symbol of Love, Strength, and Equality

Jeanette Fridh and her son André stand proudly outdoors in New York City, each holding a colorful Disability Flag Precious. The flag features bright blue, green, yellow, purple, pink, and red sections with disability symbols surrounding a globe at its center. Behind them, rows of American flags line the plaza, and sunlight reflects off nearby buildings as people gather in the background.

I am a mother to a son with a disability, and a lifelong advocate for disability rights and human rights. When I created The Disability Flag Precious in 2021, I also founded JK Tillit — to build a platform for awareness, creativity and change. I am also a lecturer, sharing stories and insights about inclusion, accessibility and human rights — inspiring people to see the value in every human being.

For more than 30 years, I have volunteered to promote equality, inclusion and dignity for persons with disabilities and their families. My work combines activism, art and music — because I believe that change begins when people both feel and understand the message.

The flag was born from love, strength and a deep belief that every person has equal worth and human rights.
Each color has its meaning — blue for authenticity, green for life, yellow for hope, purple for positivity, pink for love and red for strength. Together they form a symbol of dignity, inclusion and belonging.

The flag sings the song “We Are Precious.” The song, written together with musician Tobias Enqvist, carries the same message — that our differences make us strong and that we all have the right to be seen, heard and valued as human beings with equal rights.

In 2023, my son André and I had the honor of presenting The Disability Flag Precious in New York to a disability rights organization — a powerful moment that showed how symbols of inclusion and human rights can connect people across countries and languages. The flag has since then reached even further — to Tokyo, Denmark, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina — and the movement keeps growing.

A music video for “We Are Precious” is coming soon, and I hope it will continue to spread the message that we are all valuable.
